Tourism in the BSEC Region

  • The Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC),comprising 12 Membercountries1 welcomed 143million international tourist arrivals in 2018, a 10% increase over the previous year, exceeding Europe’s growth of 6%.
  • As of 2018, BSEC destinationsaccountfor20% of Europe’s international tourist arrivals, up percentage point from 2017. The regionrepresents10% of the world’s arrivals.
  • Between 2000 and 2018, international arrivals grew an average 6% per year in the region, above Europe’s3% growth and the world average4%per year.
  • The BSEC region earned USD74billion in international tourism receipts in 2018(EUR62billion), equivalent to13% of Europe’s tourism receipts.
  • Tourism is an important economic pillar and a major source of foreign revenues in some mature BSEC destinations. In others the potential for growth is still considerable and regional collaboration can play an important role in this development.
  • BSEC comprises both established and emerging tourism destinations with varying degrees of development in terms of infrastructure, connectivity and brand strength. Of the twelve countries, eight are in the UNWTO subregion of Central and Eastern Europe and four in Southern and Mediterranean Europe.
  • BSEC represents a market of 342million consumers, or 37% of the European population. It has a combined GDP of USD3.2trillion (2018) accounting for 14% of Europe’s GDP and about 4% of the world’s economy.

Kyrgyzstan has introduced a simplified visa regime

UNWTO is pleased to inform its Member States that Kyrgyzstan has introduced a simplified visa regime for the citizens of Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Tunisia and Sri Lanka, who are permanently and legally residing in any of the following states: Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and, are in a possession of a resident card of these mentioned countries. These new rules are applicable since 11 August 2019.

Furthermore, the short-term tourist visas for visits to Kyrgyzstan of a period of up to 1 month are also issued in a more simplified manner, on the basis of personal request and without the need for an invitation, by providing resident cards and resident visas (residence permits), from any of these states.

It is expected that the introduction of this simplified visa regime will attract visitors from the Middle East, especially in view of new opening flights from Gulf countries to Kyrgyzstan.

UNWTO strengthens its cooperation with Tajikistan during the “International Tourism Forum and Exhibition””, held on 9 August 2019 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan

The Forum - with a participation of more than 400 guests from 25 countries - provided an excellent opportunity to present the many tourism destinations of Tajikistan and discuss the state of play of its tourism development. The event was opened by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Davlatali, and by the representative of UNWTO and, took place within the 2019-2021 period of “Rural Development, Tourism and Folk Crafts” proclaimed by the President of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr.  Emomali Rahmon.

Tajikistan boasts an enormous tourism potential based on its magnificent mountainous landscapes, rich cultural and natural heritage, and welcoming hospitality of its people. UNWTO conveyed its appreciation to the Government of Tajikistan for placing tourism as a top priority in its agenda and acknowledging the powerful role of its tourism sector as a fundamental pillar of Tajikistan’s socio-economic progress that contributes to positioning it as an increasingly attractive tourism destination in Central Asia.

UNWTO was very pleased to witness that within the framework of the event several cooperation agreements were signed between the Committee of Tourism Development of Tajikistan and international tour operators and travel agencies to further enhance tourism cooperation and position Tajikistan in the global tourism map.

Inaugurated the First UNWTO-ICCA Masterclass on the Meetings Industry

With more than one hundred participants from Tashkent and other regions (Republic of Uzbekistan), the First UNWTO-ICCA Masterclass on Meetings Industry organized by the UNWTO Academy and ICCA and with the support of State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Tourism Development (SCTD) was inaugurated on 10th August in Tashkent, Uzbekistan by Abdulaziz Akkulov, the Acting Chairman of the SCTD; Dmitriy Ilin, UNWTO Affiliate Members Programme; Elif Balci Fisunoglu, ICCA Regional Director for Europe and Mirtolib Mirzakhidov, Director of the UNWTO Office “Tourism on the Silk Road” in the Republic of Uzbekistan under the SCTD. 

 

The First UNWTO-ICCA Masterclass was addressed to industry professionals and government officials from the Uzbekistan Tourism Administration, representatives of private companies, associations and academia who hold responsibilities in the tourism sector of their country related to the area of Meetings industry. 

This prestigious event was followed by 22 participants from local and national media houses and gained big publicity through press and social media channels on a national and regional level. 

 

Keynote speakers of the Masterclass - Elif Blaci Fisunoglu (ICCA) and Dmitriy Ilin (UNWTO), shared knowledge, processes and tools on the global meetings industry trends through short presentations and the introduction of a practical methodology. This Masterclass equipped participants with the knowledge and skills on the meetings industry, enhanced their expertise and created an important network among the private and public sector, thus contributing to further development of the Meetings Industry in Uzbekistan and harnessing the potential this segment can offer for advancing the competitiveness of the destination.
