Why Does Tourism Innovation matter?
Economic Growth
Tourism is a significant economic driver, accounting for approximately 7% of global trade and ranking as the third-largest export category globally. In some countries, tourism represents over 20% of GDP, underscoring its vital role in economic development.
Innovation drives economic growth by creating new business models, attracting investment, and enabling destinations to diversify their tourism offerings. Through over 30 innovation challenges and competitions, engaging over 10,000 startups and innovators worldwide, UN Tourism has activated new entrepreneurial pathways that contribute directly to local and national economies.
Job Creation
SMEs represent over 80% of the tourism value chain, making them key drivers of employment and local economic growth and startups and scaleups are a vital source of innovation for the tourism sector. UN Tourism supports them identifying their solutions and showcase them to the Member States, big corporations and destination helping them to grow their businesses and create more jobs within the sector.
Youth Employment
With over 50% of the tourism workforce aged 25 or younger, the sector offers a unique entry point for young people entering the job market. By supporting startups, digital platforms, and new business models, innovation is enabling youth to launch ventures, access funding, and develop future-ready skills — creating more agile and inclusive pathways into tourism careers.
