The tourism industry stands at a point of profound transformation, poised to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. As global travel patterns and consumer expectations continue to evolve, there is an increasing demand for innovative solutions that can revolutionize how we experience and interact with destinations.

AI and emerging technologies emerge as catalysts for change, offering unprecedented opportunities to reimagine the tourism landscape. The integration of AI represents a paradigm shift in how we understand and manage tourism destinations. From optimizing visitor flows and mitigating environmental impacts to preserving cultural heritage and fostering community engagement, AI holds the key to unlocking new frontiers of sustainable tourism.

However, the sector must take into account the ethical implications of its deployment. While AI promises enhanced experiences and streamlined processes, ensuring that these advancements align with ethical standards is imperative. Moreover, equitable access to AI technology is essential to prevent existing socio-economic disparities from becoming even further entrenched. Efforts must be made to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that all stakeholders, regardless of their background or resources, have access to the benefits of AI in tourism, one of the main priorities laid out in the UN Secretary-General’s report on Science, Technology and Innovation for sustainable development.

Alongside accessibility, compliance with data regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is paramount. Protecting the privacy and data rights of travellers is non-negotiable, necessitating robust measures for data security and consent management. Adherence to data regulations ensures that AI-driven solutions in tourism respect individual privacy while still delivering personalized and relevant experiences.

Furthermore, effective governance frameworks are necessary for overseeing the ethical and responsible use of AI in tourism. Multistakeholder collaboration involving governments, industry players, academia, and civil society is essential to establish guidelines, standards, and mechanisms for oversight. By fostering a culture of responsible innovation and accountability, governance frameworks can harness the potential of AI to elevate the tourism industry while mitigating associated risks and ensuring sustainable growth.

Against this backdrop, the thematic session serves as a pivotal platform for dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. By bringing together thought leaders, industry experts, policymakers, and technology innovators, we aim to explore the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies in shaping the future of travel and hospitality.
