The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative has welcomed a further 21 signatories, taking the total number past 110. The new signatories have been announced alongside the launch of a first annual report, which makes clear the significant progress made in tackling plastics pollution in tourism over the past year.

The 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly opens today with over 1,000 representatives meeting in the Spanish Capital of Madrid to chart a new path for an accelerated safe tourism recovery. The all-important meeting is expected to launch new initiatives which will be inclusive in the quest to save livelihoods. Amongst the initiatives to be launched are the Digital Futures Programme for SMEs, designed to help small tourism businesses take advantage of the benefits of innovation.

The biggest crisis in the history of tourism continues into a second year. Between January and May, international tourist arrivals were 85% below 2019 levels (or a 65% drop on 2020), UNWTO data shows. Despite a small uptick in May, the emergence of COVID-19 variants and the continued imposition of restrictions are weighing on the recovery of international travel.

The crash in international tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic could cause a loss of more than $4 trillion to the global GDP for the years 2020 and 2021, according to an UNCTAD report published on 30 June. The report, jointly presented with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), says international tourism and its closely linked sectors suffered an estimated loss of $2.4 trillion in 2020.
