In anticipation of the increase in interest and visitation that is expected to follow the potential nomination of these Silk Road Heritage Corridors, UNWTO and UNESCO are working with experts to design and implement an effective tourism management strategy aimed at maximizing the opportunities of tourism development while safeguarding the regions’ unique cultural heritage.

On 1-3 August 2013, the 6th UNWTO International Meeting on Silk Road Tourism took place in Dunhuang, an event jointly organized by UNWTO, China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and the People’s Government of Gansu Province. The Meeting highlighted the increasing interest in developing cultural routes associated with the Silk Road and brought together experts to raise the profile of tourism along one of the world’s most legendary travel routes.

On 9 March 2011, Ministers, Ambassadors and high-ranking officials from over 20 countries met at ITB Berlin at the first annual UNWTO Silk Road Ministers’ Summit to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Silk Road tourism development.
Organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and supported by ITB Berlin, the Summit was an opportunity for key decision makers to share ideas on how to enhance cooperation to promote and strengthen the Silk Road tourism brand.

Just over 40 years ago, the World Heritage Convention was conceived to protect sites of ‘outstanding universal value’ to humanity. Today, almost 1,000 sites are World Heritage listed and increasingly millions of people travel each year to experience these unique cultural and natural assets.

The ancient Silk Road is home to some of the world’s most impressive Heritage Sites, and the Silk Road Ministers convened at ITB Berlin 2013 to assess the key issues relating to effective heritage management for tourism.

The Meeting explored how destinations can join forces to raise the profile of the Silk Road while safeguarding these exceptional heritage sites to ensure that they can be enjoyed by generations to come.

FLAVOURS OF THE SILK ROAD Conference - Highlights & Conclusions

On 6 and 7 September 2012, representatives from tourism ministries, national tourism offices, tourism officials, experts and grass roots practitioners from across the Silk Road countries met in Baku, Azerbaijan for the “Flavours of the Silk Road: International Conference on Food, Culture and Tourism”. The goal of this conference was to highlight the huge potential of the Silk Road region for food and intangible culture tourism. During the conference experts from the areas of tourism, culture and gastronomy presented the latest findings and trends related to culinary tourism and shared examples of best practices across the Silk Road and internationally.

This document presents the conclusions and highlights that emerged from the Conference and the UNWTO Global Report on Food Tourism.

A Strategic Approach to Visa Facilitation in the Silk Road Countries

The study includes analysis of existing visa procedures and other formalities in the Silk Road countries, based on the results of a survey of the corresponding embassies and consulates. The results of the survey leads to a comparative analysis on the various rules, regulations and procedures including the visa fees currently in force in the Silk Road countries and to contrast that with the facilitation processes of other sub-regional groupings. This study gives also series of recommendations to streamline visa procedures in the Silk Road countries.
