ASEAN Tourism Forum 2014

 

The ASEAN Tourism Forum is an annual event put together by the collaborative regional efforts of the 10 member nations of Asean: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. ATF 2014 was held in Kuching in the Malaysian province of Sarawak from the 16th- 23rd of January. The UNWTO was represented by the attendance of Secretary General Mr. Taleb Rifai accompanied by the Director of the Regional Programme for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Xu Jing.

This year´s event, with the theme "ASEAN-Advancing Tourism Together"  concentrated on the exploration of the sustainable development of tourism with a focus on how ASEAN can further support its mantra: "Tourism conserves, Preserves and Protects," through their tourism initiatives and plans. 

 

Key objectives

Under the primary objective to promote the ASEAN region as one tourist destination where Asian hospitality and cultural diversity are at its best, specific objectives included:

- Project ASEAN as an attractive, multi-faceted single destination;

-Create and increase awareness of ASEAN as a highly competitive regional tourist destination in the Asia Pacific;

-Attract more tourists to ASEAN member countries;

-Promote Intra-ASEAN travel;

- Strengthen cooperation among the various sectors of the ASEAN tourist industry.

 

The event also included a one day conference in addition to Travex, a platform for International suppliers of ASEAN tourism products and international buyers to network and conduct business.
