UNWTO International Conference on Tourism and Accessibility

SUSPENDED - UNWTO International Conference on Tourism and Accessibility

As a preventive measure amidst the current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, UNWTO in-person meetings scheduled until mid-June have been postponed, cancelled or are under review. Please check back for updates.

Persons with disabilities and specific access needs are participating more and more frequently in tourism activities as a result of their growing economic and social inclusion. However, there are still many impediments and barriers that hinder normalized access to tourism facilities, products and services.

Accessibility is not a requirement only for persons with disabilities, who already account for more than 15% of the world population, but rather it has myriad beneficiaries. All people, at some point in their life, will need the practical implementation of universal accessibility. Tourism destinations that respond to these requirements will adapt their offerings accordingly, and in so doing they will also improve the tourist experience and the quality of life of all its citizens and visitors.

In light of these essential premises of accessible tourism, the 1st UNWTO International Conference on Tourism and Accessibility, co-organized with the Government of Ecuador, has the following objectives:

  1. To promote universal accessibility in the tourism sector as a factor of both inclusion and competitiveness;
  2. To highlight the leadership and coordinated work of public administrations, the business fabric and organizations of persons with disabilities;
  3. To illustrate success stories in making accessible the different links in the tourism value chain and products; and
  4. To demonstrate the great potential of innovation and new technologies in accessible tourism.

More information on this event will be available soon.
