Media and tourism stakeholders gather in Tunisia to discuss how to enhance cooperation

PR No.: 15089

More than 300 participants convened in Tunis for the 4th UNWTO International Conference on ‘Tourism and the Media’. The event, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts of Tunisia, counted with the support of CNN International.

Over twenty countries were represented at the 4th UNWTO International Conference ‘Tourism and the Media’ that took place in Tunis under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts of Tunisia.

«The creation of new partnerships between tourism and media is an excellent opportunity for dialogue. Tourism, as does the media, has the noble mission of making people travel around the world, bringing cultures closer together and promoting the values of tolerance and solidarity ” said the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts of Tunisia, Salma Elloumi Rekik.

“Media constitute major stakeholders for the tourism sector, not only in terms of disseminating information, but also with regard to connecting with the public to promote a better understanding of the sector and the principles of sustainable tourism development.” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, opening the Conference.

Talking about Tunisia he added “Tunisia is an example to the world in the way it is consolidating its democracy, as recognized by the recent award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the National Dialogue Quartet. Tunisia is also a destination of excellence and a long-term leader in the region and the world. We at UNWTO are fully confident in the ability of Tunisia’s tourism sector to overcome the current challenges and regain momentum”.

“Accuracy, responsibility and transparency are the framework in which we, the journalists, should operate,” said Jim Bittermann, CNN anchor and key note speaker at the Conference.

Bridging the gap

Sanam Shantyaei, from France 24, emphasized that “journalists need to be approached by those working in the tourism sector in an appropriate manner and with adequate resources as media constitutes the main channel to the general public.”

In that sense, the impact of media was underlined by most of the speakers, like Taieb Zahar, Director of the Tunisian magazine ‘Réalités’ who stated that “the work of journalists currently has a great impact in the image and positioning of countries.”

Communicating in times of crisis was also addressed during the Conference with participants stressing the need for professional coverage but also access to information and facilitation of resources from tourism authorities in a timely manner.

In that regard, Mr Richard Barnes, Editor-in-Chief at Cleverdis gave some recommendations to parties involved in the tourism sector.  “Tourism authorities should look to the different channels to reach media, not only through press releases, for instance. If they communicate with the tourism agencies, they will reach also the general public and this will be a great plus for the country,” he said.

As the Conference aimed at fostering a new framework of interaction with the media, a number of recommendations were emphasized through the different debates and exchanges. Among those, “be credible, close, on target, available, transparent, realistic, a facilitator, useful to and respectful of the media angle” were underlined.

“Media is the best partner that you can have, so do not be afraid of the media as journalists are the best catalyzer of your work”, concluded Mr Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary General closing the event.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), IFEMA/FITUR, Casa Africa and the Spanish Federation of Travel Agencies (CEAV) have signed an agreement on 14 October 2015 at UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid to reinforce the promotion and dissemination of the Tourism Investment and Business Forum for Africa INVESTOUR 2016, which will be held on 21 January 2016 in Madrid during the 36 edition of FITUR.

FITUR is the global meeting point for tourism professionals and the world leading exhibition for receptive and issuing tourists markets. In 2015 FITUR gathered 9.419 exhibiting companies from 165 countries/regions, 125.084 trade participants and 97.467 general public.

Organized jointly by the UNWTO, FITUR and Casa Africa, INVESTOUR 2016 will hold its seventh edition on 21 January 2016, thus consolidating its role as a frontline event whose aim is to contribute to the sustainable development of tourism as economic catalyst in the African continent. Since its creation in 2010, this forum has been an opportunity to highlight the relevance of sustainable tourism in Africa by means of consolidating public policies which foster the growth of a consistent tourism business fabric and contribute to employment creation.

The structure of this important event is organized in two sessions: The first one is devoted to round tables and the second session consists of business-to-business (B2B) meetings, a strategic platform that puts African tourism project leaders and potential international partners in direct contact with one another. Next INVESTOUR edition on 21 January 2016, the forum will repeat its two session format with a first morning session of two round tables on selected topics regarding tourism and investment in Africa which allow the participants to exchange knowledge and experiences in tourism investment related issues. Following the first session, a second afternoon B2B session, devoted to business-to-business meetings previously arranged between African tourism project leaders and potential international partners. This is an excellent opportunity for international companies to become known by representatives of African governments, to exhibit their capabilities in terms of expertise and to demonstrate their commitment to Africa, where all the economic projections are quite positive.

Among the objectives of the forum it will serve as a platform to boost the identification of investment business opportunities in the tourism sector in Africa for investors both at Spanish and international level. INVESTOUR last edition, held on 29 January 2015 during FITUR 2015 broke participants records of previous editions and was honoured with the presence of several major figures: H.E. The signature of this agreement between The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), IFEMA/FITUR, Casa Africa and the Spanish Federation of Travel Agencies (CEAV) means a step forward in the commitment of INVESTOUR organizers to promote the next edition and strengthen its role as strategic platform for the promotion of tourism in African countries during FITUR 2016. With this agreement CEAV confirms its engagement to collaborate with INVESTOUR organizers in the dissemination of INVESTOUR 2016 among its members with a view to maximize the involvement of Spanish travel agencies in the promotion of Africa as tourism destination. The Spanish Federation of Travel Agencies (CEAV) is an entity gathering all Spanish Associations of Travel Agencies (19 Member Associations) and more than 3.000 travel agencies in Spain who, thanks to this agreement, will learn first-hand the potential of the African continent for the tourism sector and promote its business opportunities.
