The Sustainable Tourism Observatory of the University of North Sumatra was established in 2017. This centre has a long-term vision to improve and develop sustainable tourism in Pangururan to become the global tourism destination. The objective is to increase the capacity and capabilities of science and technology institutions, resources, and netwroks in the field of tourism to improve the welfare of the community.

MISSION

To enhance institutional capacity and capability, resources, and science and technilogy networking in the tourism sector. Hence, improving the relevance, productivity and utilization of science and technology in the tourism sector to create sustainable tourism and economic development that will increase local people’s qualty of life in Indnesia, especially in Toba Lake region.

CURRENT MONITORING PROCESSES

In 2018, the Observatory carried out several and monitored activities carried out in the observation area. Starting from monitoring the activities carried out by the Observatory, the University of North Sumatra, the Samosir Regency Government, and other parties that carry out activities related to sustainable tourism, and also participated in activities organized by the Ministry of Tourism of Indonesia.

DID YOU KNOW...

The Samosir Regency is the result of the explosion of Supervolcano Toba Caldera some 75,000 years ago, where becuase of the explosion, Samosir Island lifted from the bottom of the lake. The results of the explosion gave the Samosir, a natural formation and the richness of biodiversity that are extraordinary.
