Jiangmen-Kaiping boasts the only World Heritage Site in the Great Bay Area, and is also the first observatory of sustainable tourism development in Guangdong Province. The monitoring theme of Jiangmen observatory is “Tourism Development and Multicultural Heritage Protection at World Cultural Heritage Site”. The monitoring work on Jiangmen’s tourism resources, environment, economy, society, culture, urban and rural recreation, and cultural heritage will help explore a model for sustainable tourism development which can minimize environmental impacts and maximize economic and social benefits.

CURRENT MONITORING PROCESSES
At present, by combining UNWTO indicators and local practice, Jiangmen monitoring focuses on four aspects: tourism and economy, tourism and community, tourist satisfaction, tourism and environment. At the same time, considering the current situation of tourism development in Kaiping each year, 1 or 2 thematic studies will be included. In 2018, the two studies were “Kaiping World Heritage conservation and utilization” and “Tour guide system for tourists at Kaiping Diaolou”.In 2019, the two studies were “Sustainable livelihoods of heritage site residents” and “The impacts of tourism capital on community construction”.In 2020, the two studies were “Tourists’ attitude and behavior in the context of epidemic” and “Survival and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage”. In 2021, studies were carried on tourism industry integration. In 2021,new business types and ocean environment were monitored, and the monitoring scope has been expanded to cover Wuyi region around Kaiping, etc.

Chinese director, Jiang Wen’s masterpiece “Let the Bullets Fly” is set in Kaiping Diaolou. The villain of the movie Huang Silang is living in the Diaolou. One of the lines is impressive: “Gun in hand, follow me. Kill Silong and occupy the to Diaolou”.
