Regional Webinar for Africa | Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 5, aiming to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, and in accordance with the UN Tourism Agenda for Africa - Tourism for Inclusive Growth, which recognizes women and youth empowerment as a priority area, the webinar was held on the 8th of March, to mark International Women´s Day.
In the tourism sector, women constitute 54% of the workforce globally, a figure that increases to 69% in the Africa region. Despite this significant representation, women in tourism often face limitations, occupying lower-paid and lower-skilled positions and more frequently engaged in informal employment compared to men, highlighting the urgent need to address systemic barriers and harness women´s full potential. In response to these challenges, the webinar aimed to equip participants with practical and actionable insights to drive positive change and advance gender equality in the tourism sector. Under the theme “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress”, the webinar featured inspiring journeys of women empowerment shared by esteemed speakers, including Hon. Mrs. Nabeela Farida Tunis, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
