sustainable cities and communities
Peace, justice and strong institutions

The presentation and on-line meeting took place due to rising interest of the Europe Member States in the activities of the IDC Department, especially providing technical assistance to project on the ground.

The Regional Department for Europe serves the UN Tourism Member States in the Region for Europe to achieve the highest standards of performance in Tourism Policy and Tourism Governance by establishing adequate contents in the Programme of Work. The Focal Points are the representatives from each country’s respective Ministries of Tourism.

The Region for Europe in UN Tourism counts with 41 Member States, 2 Associate Members and 1 Permanent Observer. The countries in the region generate roughly one half of global international tourist arrivals.

Most Members in the region belong to various supranational organizations, most notably the European Union, the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the EU Candidate Countries. The Department also collaborates with the non-member countries in the region.

Highlights:

Mr. Mayaki highlighted on-going projects in the Europe region, as well as future projects which will be launched. One particular area that was showcased under the global initiative of UN Tourism Safety of Destinations is the Action framework for tourism crisis preparedness, response, and recovery in Europe.
Europe's tourism sector is becoming increasingly exposed to security threats, which can disrupt economies, impact traveller safety, and affect destination reputation.
As a result and developed upon initiative and in close collaboration with Czechia, this strategic effort entitled SAFE-D is being set up to support Member States in strengthening their tourism crisis management capabilities through knowledge-sharing, regional cooperation, and policy alignment and by offering a dedicated regional framework that addresses these challenges to enhance tourism resilience.

Stay Tuned:

SAFE-D will focus on knowledge-sharing through a structured series of three expert-led webinars (26 March, 24 April, 15 May), addressing the key phases of crisis management:

  • Before Crisis: Strengthening Preparedness & Early-Warning à Risk assessment, early-warning systems, and crisis preparedness strategies.
  • During Crisis: Ensuring Effective Response & Coordination à Real-time crisis management, emergency communication, and response coordination.
  • After Crisis: Supporting Recovery & Long-Term Resilience à Rebuilding traveler confidence, post-crisis recovery planning, and resilience-building.
