UNWTO at the 4th Silk Road International Cultural Expo

Mr. Zhu Shanzhong, UNWTO Executive Director, was one of the main speakers at the opening ceremony of the 4th Silk Road International Cultural Expo 2019, a month-long event held throughout the Gansu Province of China.

As part of the opening ceremony, a Letter of Intent was signed between UNWTO and the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, in which both parties express their will to cooperate closely to raise tourism skills and competencies, increase tourism length-of-stay and spending, and raise international awareness of the Gansu Province as a key Silk Road destination.

The Gansu Province is a central part of the Xi’an-Urumqi land segment of the ancient Silk Road, which connected the Chinese Empire with Central Asia and Europe. The resulting heritage of thousands of years – identifiable in architecture, food, arts & crafts, heritage sites, nature and many aspects more – has the potential to convert the Gansu Province into one of the main sought after tourism destinations worldwide.
