Technical INSTO Webinar on: Employment
Thursday, 24 February 2022 | 12:00 PM CET (Madrid Time)
Tourism employment data is fundamental to understand labour markets and to formulate relevant job creation policies, promote employment opportunities, plan workforce needs as well as to contribute to human resources development addressing education and relevant training needs. A motivated and skilled workforce is key element for the competitiveness and sustainability of a destination.
In addition, aspects of gender equity and decent work are important aspects for socio-cultural sustainability. Relevant sex-disaggregated data should allow to identify the share of women employed in tourism and owning tourism enterprises, the level of seniority of the employment and existing pay- gaps. It also enables the monitoring of the quality of jobs and subsequently the wellbeing of the employee and family.
However, the measurement of tourism labour markets remains a challenge given the different measurement methods and data sources at the international, national and sub-national level. This often results in inconsistent and fragmented outcomes and does not allow for comparability among destinations.
This sixth technical INSTO webinar discussed experiences and lessons learned by selected experts and Members of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) in the field of measuring and monitoring employment. The webinar stems directly from the 11 mandatory key issue areas for INSTO members.
