Background

The number of international tourist arrivals has nearly doubled with almost a 100% growth since 1999, the year during which the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism (herein after ¨the Code¨) was established.

This number highlights the importance of having a legal instrument that manages the sector´s responsible growth. The Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics (herein after referred to as ¨the Convention¨), inspired by the principles of the Code, intends to provide essential guidelines for promoting sustainable, inclusive, and respectful tourism practices.

At its 14th meeting in 2014, the World Committee on Tourism Ethics approved the establishment of a legally binding instrument, strategically deciding to retain the content of the articles of the Code. While the Code is intended for all tourism stakeholders, the Convention addresses the United Nations, and UN Tourism Member States.

By adhering to the Convention, States are undertaking an obligation towards responsible and sustainable development – preserving the destinations´ cultural and natural tourism resources, protecting the local communities and ensuring a responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism.

Adhering to the Convention sends a clear message to all tourists visiting and stakeholders operating in the country that the destination is in line with the principles of the Code and respects the spirit of ethical and responsible tourism.

UN Tourism is organizing a series of Regional Webinar on the Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics with the aim to promote and publicize the Convention at regional level, increasing its visibility as a crucial frame of reference for promoting sustainable, responsible, and universally accessible tourism, and foster adherence thereto by Member States.
