Local Satisfaction: Understanding the Induced Impacts of Tourism on Local Society, Economy, Culture and Environment

Monday, 22 April 2024

Local resident satisfaction is a key factor for sustainable tourism development. As local residents are either directly involved in tourism or are indirect beneficiaries of tourism, they experience its impacts, whether positive or negative. Advanced local resident satisfaction surveys go well beyond the traditional way of looking at the level of local resident’s satisfaction. They also look at the induced social, economic, cultural and environmental impacts on the lives of local residents. These surveys also assess their level of involvement in the tourism sector and their awareness of the past, present and future tourism potential.

Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of local satisfaction is key to long-term sustainable development as it can significantly help tourism policy makers and planners to use tourism resources effectively and identify potential problems and conflicts in a timely manner.

This INSTO Insights webinar discussed the experiences and practical implications of INSTO members and selected experts in measuring local satisfaction, including induced aspects of tourism impacts on local residents.
