PR No.: PR 17079

As part of the observance of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017, Mastercard, a leading global payments and technology company, has signed an agreement with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to support this global campaign. Through the agreement, Mastercard becomes a Diamond Partner of the International Year.

In a gesture that expresses the company’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices, Mastercard has joined the list of partners of the International Year. The global campaign seeks to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to move towards more sustainable tourism around the world.

Mastercard operates the world’s fastest payment processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, businesses, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories.

UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai commented: “It is a privilege to have the involvement of a company with such global presence in the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Most of us use payment cards when we travel and with Mastercard on our team our cause is that much more meaningful.”

“It is an honour for Mastercard to collaborate with the UNWTO and to continue to provide innovative products and solutions to facilitate and encourage daily business activities such as purchasing, travelling, running a business and managing finances, making them easier, safer and more efficient for everyone,” added Ovidio Egido, managing director of Mastercard in Spain.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The year seeks to raise awareness among the public and private sectors as well as the general public regarding the contribution of sustainable tourism to development, while mobilizing all stakeholders to work together to make tourism a catalyst for change.

In the context of the 2030 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the International Year aims to foster changes in policies, business practices and consumer behaviour, with the objective of making tourism a more sustainable sector that can contribute to achieving these SDGs.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the specialized agency of the United Nations in the field of tourism, is mandated to facilitate the organization and observance of the International Year, in collaboration with governments, the relevant organizations of the United Nations system, regional and international organizations and other stakeholders.
