Ambassador of Georgia presents credentials to World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

The Ambassador of Georgia, H.E. Zurab Pololikashvili, has presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai, accrediting him as Permanent Representative of his country to the UNWTO. The UNWTO is the United Nations agency for tourism and is based in Madrid, Spain.
During the meeting at the headquarters of the UNWTO, Rifai expressed to Ambassador Pololikashvili the Organization’s determination and commitment to continue strengthening its close relationship with Georgia. An example of this cooperation is the 1st UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism to be held in Georgia’s Kakheti wine region on 7-9 September 2016.
Tourism is a sector of increasing importance in Georgia, which has shown sustained growth in international tourism in recent years with over 2 million international tourist arrivals in 2015, a 2.2% increase compared to the previous year, generating nearly two billion US dollars in receipts. Over the first five months of 2016, arrivals have increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2015.
Georgia has been a Member State of the UNWTO since 1993.
