Supporting excellence along the Silk Road: Official start of the UNWTO Silk Road Training and Capacity Building Programme
On 19 October, the UNWTO Silk Road Training and Capacity Building Programme officially commenced.
Jointly organized by the UNWTO Silk Road Programme of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), its UNWTO.Themis Foundation and the University of Valencia, this initiative constitutes the first edition of a novel Silk Road training that will strengthen the tourism potential of the countries involved by combining joint learning with a hands-on approach towards capacity building.
With the participation of Member State officials and Young Tourism Professionals from 16 Silk Road countries, the training rests on two interlinked pillars: 2 two-week online courses, where the participants will learn about key tourism concepts, strategies and ideas, and a 10-day onsite course in Madrid and Valencia, Spain, where, from 20-29 November 2017, the participants will apply the knowledge received to develop transnational tourism projects along the historic routes.
Multidisciplinary in their approach and guided by a renowned team of international tourism experts, the transnational tourism projects will showcase the potential of collaborative initiatives to foster sustainable growth and job creation, and showcase the potential of the Silk Road as an internationally renowned, seamless travel experience.
The UNWTO Silk Road Training and Capacity Building Programme is an official activity of the 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development and, as such, will work towards the objectives contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are official partners of this training. Special gratitude is also due to the Travel Weekly Group, the Agència Valenciana del Turisme of the Generalitat Valenciana (the regional government of Valencia), Turismo Valencia, and the Patronat de Turisme Diputació de Valencia for their support.
Over the next weeks, we will be publishing Silk Road training updates, so please keep informed via our social media outlets. Additional information on the training can be accessed here.
