Development of Tourism Statistics and Tourism Satellite Account in Oman
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism of Oman, organized a Workshop on the Development of a Tourism Statistics System for Ministry officials and all related stakeholders, in addition to technical sessions on measuring tourism employment and investment in tourism. These workshops were conducted within the framework of UNWTO’s project for the Development of Tourism Statistics and Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) in Oman which started in 2015 and is scheduled to be completed in 2018 with the compilation of a Tourism Satellite Account for the country.
The overall objective of the project is to develop an accurate and organized Tourism Statistics System to help develop the tourism sector in all its aspects of tourism policy, planning management marketing and promotion.
The workshop was inaugurated by H.E. Ahmed bin Nasser bin Hamad al Mehrzi, the Minister of Tourism of Oman, and attended by Ministry officials and representatives of all related stakeholders of the tourism industry, including National Statistical Office, Royal Oman Police, Central Bank and all other users and compilers of tourism statistics.
The aim of the workshop was to provide capacity building in understanding the essential aspects, definitions of concepts and terminologies, and methodologies in developing tourism statistical systems and to encourage and promote the exchange of information, knowledge and expertise among stakeholders to promote consistency in approaches and methodology.
