UNWTO Volunteers to support the long-term tourism policy of Bhutan focused on sustainability and quality
Ignacio de las Cuevas and Elsa Marin (providing online support), members of the UNWTO volunteer corps, have been selected to support the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) in the implementation of marketing strategies that will contribute to the overall sustainable development of tourism and to sustainable tourism operations in Bhutan.
In Bhutan, Ignacio de las Cuevas will support TCB in developing and executing the marketing strategy for key European source markets for Bhutan. He will also identify cost-effective means of promoting Bhutan worldwide and he will also provide input on product mix options to be offered to various high-end tour operators, in support of Bhutan's long-term 'high-value low-impact/volume' tourism policy.
The volunteers’ mission in Bhutan started with the visit of the UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. As a result of his three-day visit, Mr. Rifai stated that “the principle of high-value, low-impact tourism development, guiding tourism’s growth in Bhutan, is highly commendable and has undoubtedly contributed to the unique tourism brand of this country”.
The integration of volunteers as line employees in tourism administration of UNWTO Member States represents a pilot experience, providing public tourism administrations of developing countries with high calibre junior professional tourism specialists, where gaps in local expertise exist.
