III SUSTAINABLE PYRENEES CONFERENCE

Under the umbrella of sustainability, the third edition of the Sustainable Pyrenees Conference is aiming to promote the use of alternative sources of energy to substitute the use of conventional fuels. The use of renewable energy sources would reduce the emission of pollutants and therefore improve the quality of life for those living on tour planet.

This conference will create a space for dialogue, training, communication and information, from which bridges and necessary links can be built in order to progress towards the integral and sustainable development of the Pyrenees.

Objective and development

• Share information (experiences) via round tables with experts from countries with better sustainable developmental experience
• Sustainable development training opportunities for professionals.
• Make Andorra a model of sustainable development.

HES, HOTEL ENERGY SOLUTIONS

Hotel Energy Solutions (HES) is a UNWTO-initiated project in collaboration with a team of United Nations and EU leading agencies in Tourism and Energy. The project delivers information, technical support & training to help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism and accommodation sector across the EU 27 to increase their energy efficiency and renewable energy usage.

In response to the challenge of climate change, HES provides an online mitigation toolkitto help hotels reduce their carbon footprint and operations costs, thus increasing business profits. The project demonstrates how:

• SMEs can be more competitive by cutting on energy.
• Destinations can shape their policies to increase sustainability.
• Technology Providers can create new business by targeting and servicing hotels.

The HES was developed within the framework of the European program Efficency Energy Europe and has also been tested in other destinations; in an urban destination like the city of Bonn (Germany), in some rural surroundings in Romania and a location in the French alpine region of the Haute-Savoie.

This course will be taught by UNWTO HES Project Coordinator, Claudia Lisboa and Mariona Luís Tomás - an industrial engineer with extense experience in HES since she participated in the implementetion of a pilot HES project in Palma of Mallorca as Director of the project with the support of the InnoBalears company.  During these training sessions - meant primarily for hoteliers - Ms. Luís Tomás will share her conclusions drawn for the Palma de Mallorca pilot project and she hopes to convey the advantages that this system can carry for the hotel establishments.

These training sessions will be sponsored by the UNWTO.Themis Foundation. This Foundation is responsible for the implementation of the World Tourism Organization's programme of work in all matters related to Tourism Education and Training , with the aim to support the UNWTO Member States for the improvement of the quality, the competitiveness and the sustainability of the tourist sector through the promotion of education and training .

Requirements for participation

Dates: 12, 13 and 14 of November 2012 (afternoons)

Length: 15 - 20 hours

Equipment needed: Laptop computer or tablet

The participant will have to provide the following data:

Annual percentage of hotel occupation
Number of nights sold per year
Satff working fulltime
Year of construction and year of last important refurbishment
Material used in the construction of the structure, the walls and the roof of the establishment
Surface (m2) of the hotel, m2 of the rooms, nº of floors, nº of rooms, nº of beds and nº of staff beds, m2 of rooms
Annual Consumptions: electrical (*kw), gas (*lt), fuel (*lt), biomass (kg) or others
Type of renewable energies installed in the establishment and uses (power of installed ER)
m2 of land around the establishment
Avalabilitry of Spaces in the building for new installations (m2)
Year of installation of the boiler and frequency of inspections

Based on your answers in the questionnaire, you will be provided with the six most fitting energy efficient and renewable energy solutions for your hotel. In addition, the energy solutions fact sheets will give you an overview of the costs, usage of the energy solution, and further useful information.

Within only 40 minutes you can complete the questionnaire leading to your energy performance reports.

• Compare your results with similar hotels and measure your progress
