The Conference recognizes the economic significance of tourism and the importance of information to support tourism enterprises and public bodies, as underlined by UNWTO on the occasion of the G20 Summit “Tourism Means Jobs, Infrastructure, Trade and Development”.

This Conference was the first in a series of international conferences promoted by the Tourism Administration of Spain (Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Secretariat of State for Tourism, and Turespaña) with the collaboration of the International Network on Regional Economics, Mobility and Tourism (INRouTe).

The Conference aimed at advancing a first understanding on four topics that are understood to be of special importance to tourism research, particularly in a regional perspective:

1. rethinking Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in tourism,
2. fostering innovation in the tourism enterprise,
3. measuring and analysing domestic tourism, and
4. identifying instruments for measuring and modelling tourism flows.
