Experience Wildlife side-event at CMS COP11
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized in collaboration with the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), Ramsar and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) a side event on Experience Wildlife, in Quito, Ecuador, on 5 November 2014, in the framework of the Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), 3 to 9 November 2014. Public and private sector representatives and NGOs debated about the opportunities and challenges to harness tourism for the conservation of migratory species. Linking sustainable tourism to protected area management, the conservation of wetlands, community participation and the fight against poaching were among the topics covered. Participants also considered the preliminary phase of the Destination Flyways project, implemented by UNWTO in collaboration with Wetlands International and BirdLife International, among others and extensively discussed the findings of the UNWTO Briefing Paper “Towards measuring the economic value of wildlife watching tourism in Africa” as a step towards systematically measuring the economic value of wildlife-watching tourism market in Africa.
