Launch of the Global Report on Women in Tourism 2010 (A joint report by UNWTO and UN Women)

The Global Report on Women in Tourism 2010 constitutes the first directly visible result of the close collaboration between UNWTO and UN Women (formerly UNIFEM). As the first attempt to map women’s active participation in the tourism industry worldwide, the Global Report represents a landmark study in the field of tourism and gender. It focuses on five main areas: Employment, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Education and Community.

The two UN agencies have worked in partnership since 2008, aiming to bring gender issues to the forefront of the tourism industry, promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment and the mainstreaming of gender issues in national tourism policies. The joint launch of the Global Reportis intended as a follow up to the UNWTO Forum – Women in Tourism, held at ITB in 2008, and the previous 2007 World Tourism Day brainstorming event on the same theme. UNWTO and UN Women are committed to enhancing the positive impact of tourism development on women’s lives, particularly through their increased economic and social participation, in line with Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Nº3, “promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.”

Speakers invited to participate in the event include prominent women Ministers of Tourism, specialists in the spheres of gender, development and tourism affairs and notable business women with extensive experience in the sector. The scheduled panel discussion, “Pathways to Success - Shaping the future for women in tourism” will provide a forum for these experts to discuss the current state and future prospects for women in tourism.
