The West Coast University of Applied Science (FHW) was founded in 1993 in the city of Heide in the North of Germany. The FHW consists of two Faculties: The Faculty of Technology (FBT) and the Faculty of Business Studies (FBW). The Faculty of Business Studies offers among its 8 degree courses the undergraduate program International Tourism Management (ITM) and an additional Master’s program.

With the “Institute for Management and Tourism (IMT)” which was founded in 2006 as an in-institute (internal institute) the FHW sets a focus on research within the area of tourism management. The institute carries out projects for and in co-operation with the economy as well as publicly funded projects. Its major goals are to pool university activities in business-oriented tourism research and education/qualification as well as other services (esp. consulting; interdisciplinary studies) and to provide a scientifically proven foundation as a basis for strategic and practical orientation. Central research fields are development of destinations and effects of tourism, digital market research and monitoring, sustainability and slow tourism, national and international market research projects, future of tourism, business intelligence and quality and qualification in the German tourism industry.
