Moroccan Tourism on the rise

Moroccan Tourism on the rise

These past two years have been nothing short of both remarkable and challenging for Morocco. Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco successfully navigated two major challenges: Covid-19 and the Al Haouz earthquake, all while demonstrating great results in the realm of tourism.

Today, as we look back, we can only be proud of everything Morocco has achieved despite difficulties. From launching the emergency plan to save jobs during the pandemic, managing the earthquake’s impact on tourism, to launching the new disruptive tourism roadmap.

Morocco has also gained huge momentum, intensified especially by the Atlas Lions’ extraordinary performance during the Qatar World Cup, the successful hosting of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Marrakech, just a few weeks after the earthquake, and the announcement of Morocco co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The journey towards greater heights is only starting! And Morocco is ready!

ANGOLA INAUGURATES NEW AIRPORT AND WAIVES TOURIST VISA FOR 98 COUNTRIES TO BOOST TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT

Angola aims to become a nation that is open to tourism and to enhance its natural and cultural heritage by making it easier for visitors to enjoy it. Achieving this vision relies on creating conditions to attract and welcome tourists.

It is with this spirit that the Government of Angola approved, in September last year, a presidential decree that exempts citizens of 98 countries from the requirement of a tourist visa for stays in Angola for a period of up to 30 days per entry and 90 days per year.

On 10 November, a new airport was inaugurated in Luanda. The Angolan capital now has an airport infrastructure capable of handling 15 million passengers per year. The inauguration of the new airport and the tourist visa exemptions for Angola, covering the main countries that generate tourists internationally, are part of the vision of Angolans to make tourism one of the most important pillars to promote economic growth in a harmonious and diversified manner.

Expanding Horizons: Strengthening Affiliate Membership in Africa

Expanding Horizons: Strengthening Affiliate Membership in Africa

Aligned with our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive Affiliate Membership, the Affiliate Members Department (AMD) has intensified efforts to increase our presence in Africa. Acknowledging the current underrepresentation of African entities, we have dedicated recent months to a targeted Expansion Strategy.

Since September 2023, we have engaged approximately 250 entities across 19 African countries, with a specific focus on those countries currently lacking Affiliate Members. Six entities have successfully completed the application process, and we are looking forward to welcoming them to the Affiliate Members network during the first half of 2024, coinciding with the next UNWTO Executive Council.

The recently held 25th UNWTO General Assembly witnessed the inclusion of four African entities as Affiliate Members, out of a total of 39 entities. Coming from Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Tanzania, these new additions further emphasize our commitment to a more representative and global Affiliate Membership.

Looking ahead, we anticipate additional responses from our target entities by the end of December 2023. This coordinated effort aligns with our broader strategy for a quality-oriented and geographically balanced Affiliate Membership, ensuring that our Affiliate Members embody the rich diversity and expertise present in the African Region.

This event marked a pivotal moment, bringing together key stakeholders from the Spanish trade and tourism sectors to forge collaborations with chambers of commerce from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries.

Objectives and Key Outcomes

The primary objectives of the event were twofold. Firstly, to elevate the visibility of the Canary Islands as a strategic hub for Spanish businesses in Africa and, reciprocally, to spotlight the region among African enterprises eyeing opportunities in Spain. Secondly, the event aimed to foster strong and stable relationships between Spanish and African chamber structures, laying the groundwork for identifying and capitalizing on business prospects and offer the opportunities of B2B meetings.

The event witnessed high-level participation, featuring influential figures such as José Luis Bonet, President of the Chamber of Spain, Antonio Morales, President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and Farman Toure, President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of West Africa.

A crucial aspect of the event was the focus on sustainable tourism practices. Elcia Grandcourt, UNWTO Regional Director for Africa, played a pivotal role as a speaker in a dedicated tourism panel. Her insights delved into the lessons that can be learned and shared between Europe and Africa, with a specific emphasis on the unique perspective offered by the Canary Islands.

Moreover, Ms. Grandcourt engaged in bilateral meetings with Luis Padrón, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Gran Canarias. This underscores the commitment to fostering partnerships and dialogue between international organizations and regional business entities in Europe and Africa.

Looking Beyond Borders

The event did not only center around Africa and Europe but also expanded its horizons to the Americas, emphasizing the global nature of economic collaboration. This forward-looking approach positions the Canary Islands as a key player in facilitating international business connections.

In conclusion, the Encuentro de Cámaras de Comercio was a resounding success, laying the foundation for future collaborations and promoting inclusive economic growth between Spain and West Africa.
