The future of sustainable tourism in the framework of the EU Green Deal

UNWTO: In Conversation “The future of sustainable tourism in the framework of the EU Green Deal”

IFEMA, Madrid, Spain, 22 January 2020, 15:00 – 16:00, Room N102

The 2030 Agenda recognizes the critical role played by the tourism sector which accounts for 1/10 of global GDP and employment. It is referenced directly in three of the SDGs (4, 8, 12) but actually touches upon and directly impacts on all the other SDGs. UNWTO’s “European region” accounts for the majority of the world’s international arrivals, representing almost 40% of international tourism receipts, and is responsible for the creation of more than 27.3 million jobs and 407 billion USD tourism receipts in the region.

Despite of the above, tourism, in the framework of the new Green Deal, is still not directly referenced nor identified as one of the driving forces of sustainable development in Europe. There is a recognized need from European Member States to exchange views and to come together for a united message on the importance of Sustainability in tourism for the future of Europe.

UNWTO: In Conversation “The future of sustainable tourism in the framework of the EU Green Deal” will provide the framework for this important discussion to take place, bringing together high-level representatives from EU Institutions, EU Ministers of Tourism and leading EU Tourism Stakeholders and Private Sector representatives. The discussion will support the thrive of EU Member States to position tourism as a EU policy priority, highlighting tourism’s impact in regional, national, international sustainable development and prioritizing SDG’s implementation within the 2030 Agenda.
