Es un placer y un privilegio poder dirigirme hoy a ustedes hoy aquí en este formidable Palacio de Cibeles.

Madrid es la capital de España y de un líder turístico del mundo. La Organización Mundial del Turismo no podría estar en un lugar mejor. Desde hace más de 40 años que España ha sido el anfitrión generoso y solidario de la Organización que dirijo con orgullo. Y Madrid es nuestra casa, la capital del turismo mundial.

Madrid alberga a FITUR. Una plataforma que cada año reúne a líderes del turismo y marca la agenda internacional para nuestro sector y su papel en el mundo.

En nombre de todos en la Organización Mundial del Turismo, por favor acepten mis felicitaciones por el 40 aniversario de FITUR, que celebramos hoy con esta cena de gala.

Este día es un hito para el turismo.

Majestad: En la historia de nuestra Organización y de Fitur, es la primera vez que realizamos este evento.

Y también hoy, el Presidente de Gobierno, Pedro Sánchez, anunció que respalda la iniciativa de organizar un Foro Mundial con la Organización Mundial del Turismo. Madrid es la sede natural para un evento tan merecido por nuestro sector.

Y todos ustedes son parte de este proyecto. ¡Gracias!

The year 2020 marks the beginning of the "Decade of Action", as we advance towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We have only ten years left to transform the conversation into action, and to achieve together the Sustainable Development Goals. This is critical to ensure a lasting future for people and planet.

This year we are also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, reminding us of the obligation to share and advance together towards a sustainable future.

This is especially important in this period of increased uncertainty and volatility in many parts of the world – politically, economically, and socially. 

Ladies and gentlemen

But in the face of uncertainty, tourism emerges as a safe haven. 

Time and again, our sector has proven its adaptability, resilience and contribution to recovery.

Tourism is also ready to face the greatest challenge of our lifetimes: the climate emergency.

Business-as-usual is no longer an option. Instead, we have to turn the great promises into reality.

I wish to take this opportunity to express the support of the World Tourism Organization to countries across the world whose tourism sectors are fighting against the consequences of crisis, both natural and man-made. The most recent one we all know is happening in Australia and UNWTO is ready to help.

Tourism is part of the many of the answers we are looking for.

Tourism can lead the way to achieving several of the Global Goals. Tourism creates jobs and develops individual skills; it builds schools and fills classrooms, and it can bring inspiration to innovators who transform the world around them.

The benefits of tourism should be felt at all levels. We have to make sure that no one is left behind.

That is why we will dedicate this year to "Tourism and Rural Development".

Throughout 2020, we will focus on helping our Member States diversify their tourism sectors, spreading the benefits that tourism can bring as widely as possible.

With your support we will build a broader vision around this theme.

Just like the one we present here today; the "Madrid Declaration: Tourism for the 21st Century".

The Declaration is a set of ten principles that tourism needs to build into its operations and governance. These include solidarity and sustainability, innovation, and also political coordination. They look at investments and education. The Madrid Declaration is a guide on how tourism can adapt to the changing nature of the world around us, overcoming challenges and presenting solutions.
