Meeting of the Ministers of Tourism of the Americas
The meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the Americas will take place from 6 to 9 May 2021 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, and tourism has been the hardest hit of all major economic sectors. World tourism recorded its worst year in 2020, with a 73% drop in international arrivals, according to the latest data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The global health crisis has caused the loss of millions of jobs and has put hundreds of companies at risk in the region of the Americas, which is highly dependent on the tourism sector.
Given this situation, the joint response of the sector at a global level is instrumental in order to face the devastating consequences of the pandemic and lead the sector towards the recovery of tourism throughout the world and, in particular, in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Due to the urgency of formulating a global plan of action against the pandemic, the World Tourism Organization, at the initiative and at the invitation of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, has decided to hold a Meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the Americas, which will take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from 6 to 9 May 2021.
